Query #454 – Lewis - Hull; Mitchell Co., IA: I had always considered myself a Lewis until cousin Bob Lewis had a ftDNA which showed him to be a Hull. What is the connection between Mary Hull? 1700s? and Robert Lewis b. 23 Dec 1934, Mitchell Co., Iowa. Unknown if Mary Hull is actual name or married name. If married name, who was her husband from the Hull line? Currently we show her married to Samuel Lewis (?) but without verification we cannot be certain. The DNA of Robert Lewis did not show any Lewis DNA, only Hull so where is the answer?

Query #453 – Seeking info on 4th Gt Grandparents John Henry Hull and wife Rebecca Newkirk: Who were the parents of John Henry Hull (1745-1809)? Who were the parents of his wife (Rebecca Newkirk? 1748-1834)?

– Submitted 13 Aug 2019 by Joseph Wayne Hull, HFA Member #1958

  • 13 Aug 2019 Reply from Phyllis J. Hughes, HFA Genealogist: From our studies on this line, we do not think that Rebecca's maiden name is known. We do not think she was a Newkirk.

Query #452 – Elizabeth Hull m. James Vanatta; resided: Jasper Co., IA: I am in search of any information about the parents of Elizabeth Hull (d. 3 Sep 1859, Newton, Jasper Co., IA) who married James Vanatta. My best estimate is that they were John Hull (1732-1788) and Rachel Cogall (who after John Hull's death married John Vanatta, father of James). Is there anything that can confirm or disprove these suppositions, or shed any further light on this family? Thank you!

  • 13 Aug 2019 Reply from Phyllis J. Hughes, HFA Genealogist:
    Hull Family Association Journal, Vol. 8, No. 1, Spring 1997, p. 20; Vol. 8, No. 2, Summer 1997, p. 58; Vol. 8, No. 3, Autumn 1997, p. 78:
The above Journals carried the name of a John Hull with a wife Rachel who was possibly a Gossett. This Gossett information was taken from HFA member #312 Dave Boatman's The Hull Family Register, Vol. 1, Descendants of Rev. Joseph Hull (1596-1665), The Immigrant, A Reprint and Continuation of The Hull Family in America. John Hall married Rachel Cogall, 03 September 1764, Burlington Co., New Jersey. Sources: Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New Jersey, Vol. XXII, Marriage Records, by William Nelson, 1900, p. 171; Burlington County, New Jersey Marriages, by H. Stanley Craig, n.d., p. 181.
Therefore, we are now removing the Gossett name from the wife of this John Hull, until better evidence surfaces that this man was, indeed, a Hull and not a Hall, and that he is identical with the John Hull in Washington County, Pennsylvania, who married a Rachel.
John is prob. bro. of Gershom & Samuel Hull. All ch. were minors in 1788. Moses went to Ohio Co., WV; Elizabeth went to Jasper Co., IA; Nancy Agnes went to Adams (now Brown) Co., OH; Honora went to Allegheny Co., PA & Highland Co., OH; Rachel & Gersham went to Westmoreland Co., PA.
Please order my family group sheets on these people.

Query #451 – My Hull lineage: I am looking for confirmation that the lineage information I submitted is correct. I am also interested in knowing the source information that supports that the lineage information is correct from generation to generation to myself.

– Submitted 13 Aug 2019 by Suzan Walton, HFA Member #1965

  • 13 Aug 2019 Reply from Phyllis J. Hughes, HFA Genealogist: The best way to do this is to order, three at a time, our family group sheets. These should contain our sources. Nothing is ever 100 percent correct, but we do try to weed out the errors.
