• 11 Aug 2008 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Yours is a commonly asked question. One of the old errors in the 1913 genealogy The Hull Family in America is that Samuel Hull was the son of Daniel Hull and Mary Quincy. Actually Mary’s name was Quinney and not Quincy. However, the wrong parents were given for this Samuel Hull in this genealogy, as proven by the Quaker records for Daniel Hull and Mary Quinney.
     For more info on who the parents of Samuel Hull might have been, you should order these HFA Journals: Vol. 17, Nos. 1 & 2.
     Samuel Hull was not born in Clarksburg, Harrison Co., WV. It is more likely that he was b. in NJ where he was married in 1758 in Morris Co., NJ, but evidence of his birth, too, has not yet been found, despite many years of searching for this. He did not go to Harrison Co., VA (now WV) until about 30 years later. He is buried in Licking Co., OH, on the farm of his son William Hull in Hopewell Twp. We have no evidence other than this as to where he actually died.
     We have a great many HFA members who descend from Samuel Hull and Martha Glover, including the HFA Genealogist, who has multiple files on this couple and their descendants.

 Query #094 – Seeking DNA Analysis for Descendant of Theodore Hull–Daniel Hull–John Theodore Hull–Daniel Louie Hull Sr.–Washington Co., OH–King Co., WA–Skagit Co., WA; Wives’ Surnames: Ellis, Rardin, Carroll: Seeking any male descendants of Daniel Louie Hull who died in Seattle, King Co., WA on 22 Jul 1960. He was the gt. grandson of Theodore Hull (1805–1888) and Elizabeth Ellis, of Washington Co., OH.

Theodore Hull is my 3rd gt. grandfather and I have been searching for a male (Y chromosome) descendant of Theodore for many years. Theodore had three sons. Sons Samuel and Daniel both died in the Civil War. My 2nd gt. grandfather, Sgt. Reuben E. Hull, survived the war but had no male children, by his wife Ellen E. Griffith. His daughter, Emma Adell Hull, was my gt. grandmother. Samuel Hull died in 1863 without offspring.

However, Theodore’s oldest son, Daniel, who died in 1864, and his wife Hulda Rardin, did have one son, John Theodore Hull, who was born in Washington County, Ohio in 1859. He married Virginia “Jennie” May Carroll, and died in Sedro-Woolley, Skagit County, Washington in 1915. John Theodore Hull had one son, named Daniel L. Hull, born in Washington in 1905, who passed away in Seattle in 1960. His death record lists him as Dan Louie Hull Sr. which would imply that he had a son.

If we can find a male Hull descended from Theodore Hull, and more specifically from Daniel Louie Hull Sr., we will be able to determine, once and for all, if our Hull line is descended, as rumored, from the Rev. Joseph Hull of Crewkerne, co. Somerset, England who arrived in Massachusetts in 1635.

• 11 Jun 2008 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: I have several large notebooks on this VA/WV family, and I’ve never seen a portrait of Peter Hull, son of the German Peter Thomas Hohl/Holl/Hull. There would not be a photograph, because photography had not yet been developed when Peter Hull died ca. 1817—1818. There could well have been a portrait, but, if so, I’ve never heard of it.  Query #083 – Sarah Hull or Hall–Nicholas Munger–Guilford, New Haven Co., CT: I am trying to find the parents of Sarah who married Nicholas Munger, 02 Jul 1659, in Guilford, New Haven Co., CT. She was born 04 Oct 1640, in Guilford, CT, and died 31 Jan 1689, Guilford, CT. They had 2 children: sons John and Samuel. Nicholas Munger died 16 Oct 1668, Guilford, CT, and Sarah married second Dennis Crampton about 1669.

Some sources list Sarah as Sarah Hall, dau/o William and Esther Hall of Guilford, CT, and some sources list Sarah as Sarah Hull, dau/o of Andrew and Catherine (Cook) Hull of New Haven, CT. I can’t figure out if she belongs to either of them. Do you know if Sarah is a Hull? Thanks.

 Query #080 – Birth Mother Cynthia Hull–Clinton, Clinton Co., IA: I am searching for a Cynthia Hull who would have been in the Clinton, Iowa area in June 1963. She is my birth mother. There is no other information in the court files other than her name. There is no birth father’s name listed either. On the adoption petition Cynthia asserted that the name and whereabouts of the birth father were unknown. I do not know if she was single or married at the time. I do not know how old she was either. Cynthia had me at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton, Iowa on June 27, 1963. The doctor was Dr. Don F. Mirick. My adoptive parents told me that my birth mother was a paraplegic from polio and in a wheelchair. I cannot prove this but it is what I was told. My adoptive mom was a nurse at the same hospital and also worked with Dr. Mirick. My adoptive mother died January 1992, so I can’t ask any other questions.

If there is anything anyone can do for me to help me try to find Cynthia Hull I will appreciate it greatly. Thank you.

• Ref.: 1850 Census, Allegheny Twp., Blair Co., PA: James, 39, with his wife Christina 27, Mary J., 1 (daughter), Elizabeth, 59 (his mother?), Mary Hallet, 34 (his sister?), and Abraham Fetters, 56.

Others who appear in Antis, Blair Co., PA are Andrew Hull, 69, b. MD, Rachel, 55, b. MD, David Hull, 40, b. PA, Margaretta 37, b. PA.

• Ref.: Family of Abraham Fetters (from Robert Fetters), Huntingdon Co., PA. Court Records 1828: David Hull gave oath of testimony about estate of Jacob Fetters, decd. May 20, 1833 Court Records: deed for Abraham Fetters, son of Jacob Fetters. James Hull witnessed claims.
• Ref.: Blair Co., PA Tax list: James Hull in Logan Twp. 1850–1856. In 1852 David Hull appears in the same Logan Twp. records; in 1856 James’s name is crossed out and David is written over it. David continues to appear until 1858 when his name is crossed out.

If Elizabeth is James Hull’s mother and she was born in MD, and Andrew and Rachel were born in MD, this may lead to some connection to James and Elizabeth. Both David Hull and James Hull testify for Abraham Fetters about land and his deceased father, Jacob Fetters. This shows that both David and James were close to the Fetters. James’s name being crossed out in the tax records and David’s name replacing it, shows another possible connection between James and David. When James moves to Illinois in ~1856, this is when David’s name replaces James.

• 1860 Stephenson Co., IL Census: James, his wife Christina, and his first 2 children who were born in PA. ~1853, Matilda and 1855 William A., and an additional daughter Amanda, 2, are included in the census.
• 1860 Freeport, Stephenson Co., IL Census shows Elizabeth Hull, b. MD, along with Rachel Hull, 30, b. OH, Josephine, 14, b. OH, and George, 40, b. OH. Elizabeth living with other Hulls who were born in OH shows the great possibility of connection to the Hulls of OH. I am not aware of any connection yet.
• 1865 Stephenson Co., IL State Census places James and Christina and children in Harlem Twp.
• 1865 Stephenson Co., IL State Census places Elizabeth with 4 males in the City of Freeport, IL.

James and Christina are both buried in Stephenson Co., IL in Grandview Cemetery. Elizabeth Hull, widow, and Rachel Hull sell lot in Freeport, IL, October 1866 (Ref.: Stephenson Co. Deed book #45). Elizabeth does not show up in any of the censuses after the sale of the lots. I have no record of her death either.

• 14 Feb 2008 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Regarding Joseph Hull and Keziah Christie Hull, they apparently did have a son named Daniel Chrystie Hull but he is a different man than your Daniel, so you are correct that your Daniel is not the son of Joseph Hull and Keziah Christie. This Joseph also had a son named Elijah Chrystie Hull, but he was b. 03 Feb 1800 and would not be your Elijah Charles Hull, b. 15 Jan 1820, who was the son of your Daniel and Elizabeth Hull.
     So you are correct that these websites contain the wrong information. Two different Daniel Hulls and two different Elijah C. Hulls have been confused here. Tentatively, your Daniel Hull is listed as the son of Moses and Elizabeth Hull, but people are still working to try to confirm this.

• 18 Jan 2008 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: This is one of the problem Hull lines in NJ and also in KY. The Isaac Hull, who m. Mercy or Massie Vaughn, is given as the son of Sheriff Isaac Hull, b. 1731, and Anne Dunham in The Hull Family in America [HFAm], pub. 1913. However, the younger Isaac Hull’s Rev. War pension states that he was b. in 1740 in Middlesex Co., NJ, which if true, makes it impossible for him to have been the son of Sheriff Isaac Hull, b. 1731. If the younger Isaac Hull were b. in 1740 and the older Isaac in 1731, then we have to look elsewhere for this Isaac Hull’s parents. I would begin by looking at all of the “Dangling NJ Hull lines” that we published several years ago in our HFA Journal. These were lines that were not carried down in HFAm; this Journal is still available to our HFA members.

We know that it does contain some serious errors. We also have extensive records on your ancestor, Henry Hull. We do not have any documentation, however, that his middle name was Harrison and we believe this to be incorrect.
     The HFA Journal, Vol. 14, #3 has a featured article on your family, entitled “The Henry Hull and Catherine Snider Family of Pennsylvania, Trumbull and Wayne Counties, Ohio, Descendants to Lorain and Geauga County, Ohio,” along with their bible record. These Journals are still available to our HFA members.
  We believe that the above genealogy has erred in naming the John who married Rebecca as the father of your Henry Hull. He was the father of a Henry Hull, but this Henry is a entirely different man than yours.
     I have sent you our family group sheets for both this John Hull, who married Rebecca, and his son Henry Hull, who married Christina Cox. I have also sent our family group sheet for your Henry Hull, who married Catherine “Caty” Snider/Snyder and you will see from these family group sheets that these two Henrys were two different men. John Hull’s son instead is the Henry Hull who married Christina Cox; he had a different birth date than your Henry and a different set of children. It is not yet proven that this John Hull came from Ireland. He may connect to some Irish Hulls, as the DNA analysis indicates, but we do not know that this John was the immigrant of the family.
     We have made very thorough studies of the Hulls in Washington Co., PA. There were at least 25 branches there that we cannot say relate to each other. We cannot even confirm that your Henry Hull was in Washington Co., PA, although we do believe he probably went to OH from PA. We have had the benefit of the excellent research done by our own HFA members who descend from these lines. They are first-rate and experienced genealogists, who really have cared about documenting and verifying their information. No doubt you are referring to the Henry/Heinrich Hull/Holl who was b. 01 Apr 1760, commonly given to the 1741 German immigrant, Peter Thomas Hohl/Holl. However, this parentage is definitely incorrect, as proven by land records and DNA testing. Peter Thomas Hohl/Holl was not the father of Henry Hull. This is one of the most misunderstood lines out on the Internet today.
     We have published extensive articles on both the Peter Thomas Hohl line and the Henry/Heinrich Holl line. These are available to our HFA members.

I have used Ancestry.com and have a substantial amount of data referring me all the way back to Thomas Hulle, b. 1275, Axminster, co. Devon, England.

• 03 Jan 2008 Reply from the HFA Genealogist: Your line is a Hull line that we are very familiar with. We have this line traced back to the immigrant and beyond, but it does not connect to Thomas Hulle, b. 1275. This is a common error seen all over the Internet.
     As for suggestions of more that you can do, please join the Hull Family Association, so we can document your line and correct what is incorrect. Also we have published articles in our HFA Journals which do pertain to your line. These are still available to HFA members.
