21 Jan 2016 | Notice to Our HFA Members: From Phyllis J. Hughes, HFA Genealogist and Journal editor – Please let one of your New Year’s Resolutions be that, when you are sending e-mails to our HFA officers—especially to me—that you will:

(1) Always sign your full name. You would be surprised at how many e-mails we get giving only your given name and you would also be surprised at how many of our members have the same given names. It takes up our valuable time to try and decide just who is writing.

(2) Always include your HFA number with your mail. That helps us to locate your lineage more readily and, in turn, helps us to answer your questions.

We regret that we can no longer guarantee that your e-mail will be answered promptly if you neglect to give us your full name and your HFA number.

20 Sep 2014 | Spokt Is Not Spam: From the HFA Website Committee to All HFA Members: Earlier this week you hopefully received a message with a subject-line that ran something like this: “David Hughes invited you to Spokt.com!” If you suspected that this was spam, it is not.
Spokt.com is the alternative that we have chosen to replace MyFamily.com, which is shutting down at the end of the month. The invitation to join Spokt is legitimate. You may already have thrown away your invitation. If so, please email me and ask for another.
All of the MyFamily.com queries (News category) have been migrated to Spokt, but it has not yet developed all the features of MyFamily.com. The good news is that many of the missing features have been stored by Spokt and will be implemented later. We’ll keep you posted.
Feel free to look through Spokt and let us know what you’d like changed so we can create a wish list to send to Spokt.

08 May 2014 | Attention!!! Is Your Hull Ancestor in a Biography?: From Phyllis J. Hughes, HFA Genealogist and Journal editor – I presently have approximately 550 large notebooks comprising Hull information. These notebooks cover all states in the US. We would like to publish a biography of your ancestor in one of our upcoming Journals, if it is in our files. Please turn your request in to me and we will check our files to see if such a biography exists. We must have a name (or names), a date (preferably pre 1910), and a location (including a county and state), in order to do this. Include your full name and HFA number. Please send your request to me: .

06 Dec 2013 | Hulls in the California Gold Rush: From Phyllis J. Hughes, HFA Genealogist – Did one of your Hull ancestors participate in the California Gold Rush of 1848–1850? Are you missing your ancestor in the 1850 or 1860 United States Census? If so, chances are that your missing forebear was involved in the California Gold Rush. More than 90,000 people made their way to California in the two years following the discovery of gold, and more than 300,000 by 1854.

The Hull Family Association is here to assist you with any potential people who joined the throngs of fortune-hunters questing for new-found wealth through the discovery of gold.

Our April HFA Journal will contain a detailed account of the Hulls in the 1850 and 1860 California US census, plus the 1852 California State Census. Using our information from the detailed HFA database, we will include the names of wives and children of these fortune-seekers when that data is available to us.

A bonus, also to be printed in a future issue of the Journal, will be an article on Hulls involved in mining in other locations.

Please notify us if you have located your ancestor in California in this era—especially in the 1850 or 1860 census. Contact: Phyllis J. Hughes, HFA Journal Editor at: .

04 Jun 2013 | Family Search Family Tree Launched: From Dan Hull, HFA President – Some of you may be aware that Family Search Family Tree has officially launched worldwide for anyone to use for free the wiki-based family search engine and Family Tree genealogy program. This new system allows you to search billions of records and attach the complete reference of the record to your ancestor in the Family Tree Genealogy Program. If someone has entered improper data you may correct it and add sources to substantiate your claims. This has great potential for collaboration with other people of similar heritage across the world. It also has, as one of its main goals, to eliminate duplication and improper entries. Check it out here.

We will try to have a special introduction to this new program at our annual meeting. Enjoy your summer!

  • Descendants of Trustum Hull and Elizabeth (?Bescherer) Hull of Piscataway, Middlesex County; Peapack, Somerset County, and Roxbury and Chester Townships, Morris County, New Jersey. [This is a family which was given incorrectly in The Hull Family in America, 1913. Several HFA members have worked on this line which is now corrected. This correction now leads to a major discovery on another branch of Hulls given erroneously in The Hull Family in America, i.e., the Samuel Hull-Martha Glover line, from whom so many of our HFA members descend.]
    and
  • The Rest of the Story: William Hull and Elizabeth (Maxey) Berrie Hull Tucker of Colleton County, South Carolina and St. George Island, Amelia Island and Black Hammock Island, St. Augustine, St. Johns County, Spanish Florida; Descendants to Camden County, Georgia. [This is Part Two of an earlier article which we did on this same Hull family. Part Two gives details, which Part One did not reveal.]

We will also feature the Bible Record of Jonathan and Nancy Agnes Beaty Hull, and some Civil War records from this same Kentucky and Tennessee family, along with some old Hull letters.

Our continuing article on various Hull houses will also be included in the upcoming Journal.

28 Oct 2010 | Summer 2010 HFA Journal Table of Contents: We’ve posted the Table of Contents of the latest HFA Journal.

28 Oct 2010 | Warning! Error in “Find A Grave” Burial Place for the Rev. Joseph Hull, 1635 Immigrant from Crewkerne, co. Somerset, England to New England: From Phyllis J. Hughes, HFA Genealogist – As most good genealogists know, we are constantly finding errors in our Hull/Holl/Hohl records in not only past publications, but also now on the Internet. HFA member #0000 “Saratoga” Robert “Bob” E. Hull has just pointed out a new error.

He has informed us that the burial place for the Rev. Joseph has been given as Saint James Episcopal Church Cemetery, Edison, Middlesex County, New Jersey. This page was added to Find A Grave on September 12, 2003 by Wade Schultz, along with some statistics for the Rev. Joseph Hull. This is cited as: Find A Grave Memorial #7864414.

With all due respect to Mr. Schultz, anyone who has ever studied the life of the Rev. Joseph Hull knows that he never set foot in New Jersey, even though three of his sons did. These sons were Hopewell, Benjamin, and Samuel Hull.

The Rev. Joseph Hull died on 19 November 1665 on the Isle of Shoals, York County, Maine. His burial place is unknown, even though some “guesses” have been made as to its location.

In “Saratoga” Bob Hull’s message to us, he states: “As you know anyone can post almost anything. Please help me correct this.” We applaud Bob for his effort is disposing of this erroneous information. We do hope, too, that our HFA members and anyone else who is concerned about this will persuade Mr. Schultz to remove this erroneous information from Find A Grave.

Update 06 Nov 2010: The above-referenced Find A Grave Memorial was removed. Thank you to Rebecca Hull (HFA Member #1675) and Margaret Loos for that information.

28 Oct 2010 | New Recommended Link: We’ve posted a new link to the 1895 U.S. Atlas on our Recommended Links page. Thanks to Phyllis Hughes, HFA Genealogist, for the suggestion.

Since the HFA began posting queries here four years ago, we have received an average of exactly one query a week.

19 May 2010 | Updated Book on The Descendants of Richard Hull Immigrant of the New Haven Colony (now in Connecticut): From Robert E. Hull (“Saratoga Bob,” HFA Member #0000) – I am planning to issue a CD electronic book which will be an update of the “The Descendants of Richard Hull” of the New Haven Colony. This line was originally published in 1913 by the previous Hull Family Association, and was entitled The Hull Family in America, by Col. Charles H. Weygant.

I have been collecting information which has become available through:

  • the present Hull Family Association and their publications,
  • Families of Ancient New Haven, by Donald Lines Jacobus,
  • HFA member lineages, and
  • numerous other miscellaneous sources.

These data are all stored in my Extended Hull Family Database (EHFD) which has reached 125,711 in number of individuals.

I am calling for people who descend from the said immigrant, Richard Hull, to send in any updates, changes, or additions to their own family data, plus family photographs up to circa World War I—and tombstone photographs. The book will not cover current living generations. Please send in your material as soon as possible, as I will publish by Christmas time if practical. I can be contacted here:

16 Feb 2010 | Hull/Holl/Hohl DNA Project – Lineage Posting: From the HFA DNA Project Committee – Following the untimely 2009 death of James Reynolds Hull, who initiated the Hull/Hohl/Hohl DNA Project in 2002, the Hull Family Association (HFA) has agreed to carry on the project under the direction of its 5-member DNA Project Committee.

Y Chromosome DNA analysis results are still available, including several new updates and corrections (see this chart). In order to better identify the various groups that have been tested, the HFA is obtaining permission to post the lineages of donors, while omitting data on living people. We have begun this posting with Lineage 3.

We invite both HFA members and non-members to participate in the DNA Project and/or lineage posting. Please contact the HFA Genealogist (genealogist [at] hullfamilyassociation.org) if you (1) have questions or feedback, (2) if you wish to contact donors whose lineages have been posted, or (3) if you, as a DNA donor, will allow us to post your own Hull lineage.

Access the Donor Lineage Posting here. It will be updated as we receive permission to publish new lineages.

04 Jan 2010 | New E-Book Published: Robert E. Hull (“Saratoga Bob,” HFA Member #0000) has published The Descendants of Mr. George Hull and Thamzen Michel, Revision I, copyright 2009. It is a revision to and an update of the book by a similar name published in 1994. It is now being offered for sale by the Hull Family Association, as the author has kindly given the HFA the rights to sell the book. See additional information here.

23 Jan 2010 | Notice to the German Peter Thomas/Tomas Hohl/Hull Descendants: From Phyllis Hughes, HFA Genealogist – If you are carrying Francis Hull, Henry Hull, William Hull, Robert Hull, David Hull, and John Hull, as sons of the German Peter Thomas Hohl/Hull, your information is incorrect. Please do not be misled by multiple sites on the Internet, which state that these men are the sons of Peter Thomas Hohl/Hull.

Both our research and the DNA analysis have shown that Peter Thomas Hohl/Hull had only these four sons:

  • Peter Hull
  • Adam Hull
  • George Hull
  • Jacob Hull

This is confirmed, not only by DNA analysis, but also by the original land records, probate records, tax records, and a wide study and analysis of the children in this family, conducted for over twenty-five years. Various published genealogies such as:

Cleek, George W. “Early Western Augusta [County, Virginia] Pioneers….” Staunton, VA: manuscript, 1957, pp. 369–373. [Has significant errors]

Moody Hull, “Hull Family,” typescript manuscript, 1942. [Has errors copied from Early Western Augusta Pioneers, by Geo. W. Cleek, 1957]

Prince, I. C., Genealogy of the Hull, Scott, and Prince Families, 1931. Privately published

Cook, Roy Bird, Hull manuscript, “Peter Thomas Hull-Dyer-Keister-John Bird-Cook-Joseph Conrad Families,” from the Roy Bird Hull Collection, Box 20, Vol. 67, West Virginia University Library

have published the incorrect information, along with these county histories:

Morton, Oren F. A History of Monroe County, West Virginia. Staunton, VA: The McClure Co., Inc., 1916. [Has significant errors]

Morton, Oren F., B. Lit. A Centennial History of Alleghany County, Virginia. Dayton, VA: J. K. Ruebush Co., 1923. Repr. 1970. [Has significant errors]

Morton, Oren F., B.L. A History of Highland County, Virginia. Monterey, VA: by the author, 1911, Baltimore: Regional Publishing Co., Repr., 1969. [Has significant errors]

Morton, Oren F., B.Lit. A History of Rockbridge County, Virginia. Staunton, VA: The McClure Co., Inc., 1920. [Has significant errors]

Please pass this information on to any correspondent who is listing the above incorrectly named sons.

For more information on this issue, please see these articles from the Hull Family Association Journal, as they clarify and explain who the documented sons of Peter Thomas Hohl/Hull were:

  • Vol. 9, #2, Summer 1998: “A New Analysis of the Sons of the German Peter Thomas Hohl/Holl/Hull and Susanna Margaretha Dieffenbach of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Augusta County, Virginia (now Rockingham County), and Pendleton County, West Virginia (now Highland County, Virginia),” Part I. (See: Updates and Corrections: Vol. 9, #3; Vol. 11, #3; Vol. 12, #1).
  • Vol. 9, #3, Autumn 1998: “A New Analysis of the Sons of the German Peter Thomas Hohl/Holl/Hull and Susanna Margaretha Dieffenbach, Part II: Francis Hull of Augusta County, Virginia.” (See: Corrections: Vol. 11, #2, #3; Vol. 12, #1).
  • Vol. 10, #1, Spring 1999: “A New Analysis of the Sons of the German Peter Thomas Hohl/Holl/Hull and Susanna Margaretha Dieffenbach, Part III: Philip Hull and Elizabeth Barbara Lingenfelter; Family of John Hull and Ann Mary Lingenfelter” (See: Update: Vol. 10, #2).

23 Nov 2009 | Hull, Holl, & Hohl Federal Land Patents and Homestead Land – Post 1800 – Rectangular Survey Land: From Phyllis Hughes, HFA Genealogist – I am currently inputting into the HFA database the Hulls, Holls, and Hohls who acquired Federal land patents and homestead land in states where the rectangular survey real estate was granted. The General Land Office issued more than 2 million patents that passed evidence of title to individual parcels of public land. Some patentees bought their land for cash, others homesteaded a claim, and still others came into ownership via one of the many donation acts that Congress passed to transfer public lands to private ownership. The grants include the first land-owners in these particular states:

AL, AR, CO, FL, IA, ID, IL, IN, LA, MI, MN, MO, MS, NE, NM, OH, OK, SD, TX, UT, WA, and WI

Thus far I have input Hull/Holl/Hohl land in approximately 130 counties, but this project is not yet completed. I am willing to send out by e-mail to our HFA members my family group sheets, one at a time, showing these land grants and the date of the grant(s), if you request a specific name, which cites specific information, e.g., John Hull, b. ca. 1840, m. Mary Smith; land in Peoria Co., IL.

I am finding that some of these Hulls filed for patents and homesteads in counties other than where they appear in census records. In some cases, two generations of a specific family have been issued these land patents. This compilation also includes names of women who patented land. Contact me at:

Note: An advantage to Summary Notification is that you receive a list of replies to other members’ posts. With Instant Notification, you receive immediate notification only of replies to your own posts.

If you have any questions, as always, feel free to e-mail the Webmaster.

29 Dec 2006 | Passing of Howard Cox: The HFA recently received the sad news of the death of HFA member #0892 Howard Cox with this message from his wife, Dee Cox:

Howard passed away at 12:45 p.m., Dec. 23. He went as he wished, quickly with no pain. He had esophagus cancer and could no longer swallow anything. Please pass the word to the Hull friends.

Howard served as our Membership Secretary/Treasurer for the 2003–2004 term. He and Dee rarely missed an HFA reunion and they hosted us in October 2001 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. At several of our meetings there were three generations of Howard’s family who attended, as well as his sister, HFA member #0863 Mary C. Cox Stipe. HFA member #0951 Robert Eads Cox is Howard and Dee’s son. HFA members #0920 Donald Elbert Cox and #0951 Robert Enos Cox are other relatives.

The service was at Zion Church of Christ, Lehighton, Pennsylvania at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, 28 December. Dee has asked that instead of flowers any memorial gifts be sent to a charity of choice in Howard’s name.

The HFA extends its sincere sympathy to Dee, their children, grandchildren, and the entire family of Howard Cox.

Pointer image   03 Jul 2006 | Help Us Keep Up-to-Date: Please help us to keep our records current in two different ways:

  • If your e-mail address has changed since you first submitted it to the HFA, please send us your current one
  • If you have updated your Hull lineage since you first submitted it to the HFA, please send us your current lineage. This would include all  who have also found more than one Hull lineage in their ancestry
